## Safety gear
[Guide →](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-safety-guide/)
Wavelength-rated glasses and fire protection. Buy these before the first cut, not after.

- Safety**Amerex B417T 2.5 lb ABC fire extinguisher with bracket**Universal fitLasers cut by burning; a small ABC extinguisher mounted beside the machine is the cheapest fire insurance you can buy. Dry-chemical powder can ruin a laser's optics and electronics; LightBurn recommends a CO2 extinguisher for the machine itself.[Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084P5PPNC?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)
- Safety**Amerex 322 5 lb carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher**Universal fitClass B:C CO2 leaves no powder residue, so it puts out a fire in the machine without destroying the optics. Pricier than ABC; not rated for Class A (wood/paper) fires on its own, so keep a fire blanket too.[Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F5CJHFW?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)
- Safety**CARLANY 190–490 nm OD6+ laser safety glasses**Universal fitBlue-diode protection for anyone near an open-frame laser, or when you lift the lid or override an interlock on an enclosed one. Covers 445–455 nm blue diodes only; does not protect against 1064 nm IR/fiber or 10.6 µm CO2. Match the OD rating to your laser's wavelength.[Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08R4PMCHR?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)
- Safety**Cloudray 1064 nm laser safety goggles**Compatible, third-partyThe invisible 1064 nm beam of fiber and IR lasers needs its own eyewear; blue-diode glasses won't stop it. Fits: [ComMarker B4 20W](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/commarker-b4-20w/), [xTool F2](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/xtool-f2/), [xTool F1 Ultra](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/xtool-f1-ultra/), [xTool F2 Ultra](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/xtool-f2-ultra/), [LaserPecker LP5](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/laserpecker-lp5/), [Falcon A1C 10W](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/creality-falcon-a1c-10w/), [Falcon A1 Pro](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/creality-falcon-a1-pro-20w/). For 1064 nm sources only. Dual-laser machines need protection for both wavelengths; check the OD rating on the listing.[Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078J3JS39?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)
- Safety**Prepared Hero emergency fire blanket, 39 × 39 in (2-pack)**Universal fitSmothers a flare-up on the bed without coating the machine's optics in extinguisher powder.[Check price](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TYT543Y?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)

## Fume extraction & enclosures
[Guide →](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-ventilation-guide/)
Every material makes smoke. Vent it outdoors with a duct fan, filter it with a purifier, or contain an open-frame machine in an enclosure.

## What to buy first
Three things come before any upgrade: eye protection rated for your laser's wavelength (unless the machine is a fully enclosed Class 1 unit and you never run it with the lid open), a way to get smoke out of the room, and a fire extinguisher within reach. Many open-frame diode lasers ship with a pair of glasses; check that they're rated for the wavelength and optical density the maker recommends rather than assuming.

## Ventilation: duct out or filter
Venting outdoors through a window kit and an inline duct fan is the cheapest and most effective option when you have a window. A smoke purifier with HEPA and activated carbon filters lets you run indoors where you can't vent, but the filters are a running cost and carbon saturates quickly with heavy wood cutting. Enclosed machines have an exhaust port; open frames need an enclosure to capture smoke at all. Our [ventilation guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-ventilation-guide/) covers duct sizing and fan airflow.

## Air assist and a honeycomb bed
Air assist blows smoke and debris away from the cut, which means cleaner edges, deeper cuts per pass and fewer flare-ups. Many current machines include it; on older or budget open frames it's the most worthwhile upgrade. A honeycomb bed lifts the work so the beam exits cleanly and back-side scorching drops, though it collects residue and needs cleaning.

## Rotaries are for round things
Tumblers, mugs, rings and bottles need a rotary that spins the item under the beam. Buy the one made for your machine where possible: the software, mounting and connection are matched. Roller rotaries suit tumblers and bottles; chuck rotaries hold tapered or uneven items and rings. Galvo machines and enclosed boxes sometimes need a riser to fit a rotary underneath.

## Materials that behave
Settings only transfer between jobs if the material is consistent. Laser-grade basswood plywood uses a glue that cuts cleanly; cast acrylic engraves white and frosty where extruded acrylic doesn't. Before you buy anything new, check it in the [material checker](https://laserengraversguide.com/tools/material-checker/), and never laser PVC or vinyl. Still choosing the laser itself? Start with the [comparison chart](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/).
