By [Laser Engravers Guide Editorial Team](https://laserengraversguide.com/about/) · Updated October 30, 2026 · [How we score](https://laserengraversguide.com/how-we-research/)

Our score comes from manufacturer specs, professional reviews, and owner reports. It is not a hands-on lab test.

## The verdict
The M2 is the laser we'd hand a nervous first-timer: it arrives assembled, it's Class 1 certified, the cameras take the guesswork out of placement, and the 10 W base model costs $499. The trade-off is cutting power and openness. 10 W is an engraver that cuts thin stock, it's locked to xTool Studio, and the upgrade path (20/40 W heads, IR, inkjet) pushes the total toward an xTool S1 or Falcon A1 Pro. If thick wood or clear acrylic is the main job, a CO2 such as the xTool P2S is the right tool.

### What we like

- Class 1 enclosure (TÜV SÜD certified) with a built-in air pump and exhaust fan, so no goggles in normal use
- Two cameras (5 MP panoramic + 2 MP close-range) plus autofocus make placing designs on blanks drag-and-drop
- Magnetic swappable heads: add a 20 W or 40 W diode, a 3 W IR head for metal and plastic, or a CMYK inkjet later
- $499 base price on Amazon, roughly half what the M1 Ultra it replaces cost

### Watch out for

- The 10 W head cuts only about 8 mm basswood and 3 mm black acrylic in one pass (maker claim), and no clear acrylic
- xTool Studio only; xTool lists no LightBurn support
- Extras add up: Tom's Hardware notes bundles pass $1,000 and replacement ink cartridges cost $99
- No external air port for a third-party pump, and you still need to vent the hose outside or buy a purifier

- Cut depths from xTool's M2 spec table (checked Oct 29, 2026), all single-pass: 10 W 8 mm basswood / 3 mm black acrylic; 20 W 10 mm / 8 mm; 40 W 15 mm / 11 mm.
- xTool lists stainless steel and aluminum as diode-engravable. On bare stainless a blue diode leaves a slow, dark oxide mark; for crisp marks on bare metal and plastics add the 3 W IR head.
- Tom's Hardware reviewed launch pricing of $599 for the 10 W standalone; Amazon showed $499 against a $699 list price on Oct 29, 2026.
- A 2026 launch: the 10 W listing had 55 Amazon ratings, so long-term reliability is not yet established.

Specs are compiled from manufacturer listings and independent reviews and may change between production runs. Laser makers re-bundle often, so confirm what's in the box on the Amazon page before buying.
The xTool M2 10W is an enclosed, camera-guided diode laser built for people who have never owned a laser and want something that behaves more like a craft appliance than a shop tool. It arrives assembled, it’s Class 1 certified, and two cameras plus autofocus make placing a design on a blank close to drag-and-drop. It costs about $499 on Amazon (check today’s price), which is why it’s our pick for beginners. If you’re not sure a 10 W enclosed diode suits your projects, run them through the [laser matcher](https://laserengraversguide.com/tools/laser-matcher/) first.

## Who the M2 is for (and who should skip it)

It’s for first-time buyers who want to make gifts, signs, stickers, coasters and small wood or leather pieces at home, in a classroom or in a shared room where goggles for everyone aren’t realistic. The 426 × 320 mm bed is big enough for most craft blanks and small signs.

Skip it if cutting is your main job. The 10 W head is an engraver that cuts thin stock: xTool’s spec table gives 8 mm basswood and 3 mm black acrylic in one pass, and like every blue diode it can’t cut clear acrylic. Skip it too if you already use LightBurn, because the M2 runs only on xTool Studio. Buyers who want LightBurn and more power in a Class 1 box should compare the [Creality Falcon A1 Pro](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/creality-falcon-a1-pro-20w/), and anyone who needs clear acrylic should look at a CO2 such as the [xTool P2S](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/xtool-p2s/).

## Key capabilities

The cameras do most of the work. A 5 MP panoramic camera shows the whole bed and a 2 MP close-range camera handles fine positioning, so you can see where the design will land before the laser fires. Autofocus removes the focus-block step that cheaper machines like the [Falcon A1](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/creality-falcon-a1-10w/) still need.

The modular heads set the M2 apart. They swap magnetically, so the same machine can take a 20 W or 40 W diode, a 3 W IR head for bare metal and plastics, or a CMYK inkjet head for print-then-cut crafts (inkjet mode works over 300 × 284 mm). That’s a real upgrade path. It’s also how costs climb. Tom’s Hardware notes that bundles pass $1,000 and replacement ink cartridges cost $99, and the 40 W standalone is about $1,199, more than a Falcon A1 Pro and within reach of the [xTool S1 40W](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/xtool-s1-40w/).

On metal, be realistic. xTool lists stainless steel and aluminum as diode-engravable, but a blue diode leaves a slow, low-contrast dark mark on bare stainless. Coated tumblers and anodized aluminum mark cleanly; for bare metal, the IR head or a fiber laser is the right tool. The [material checker](https://laserengraversguide.com/tools/material-checker/?material=stainless) shows what each laser type can handle.

## Day-to-day use

xTool Studio is the only software, and it’s built around the M2’s cameras and heads. You trade LightBurn’s depth for a guided workflow, which is a fair trade for most beginners. Our [LightBurn vs xTool software guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/lightburn-vs-xtool-creative-space/) covers what you give up. The machine connects over USB or Wi-Fi and weighs 27.1 lb, light enough to move to a different table.

Air assist is built in, as is an exhaust fan. There’s no external air port, though, so you can’t swap in a stronger third-party pump later.

## What you’ll need beyond the box

- **Ventilation.** The M2 pushes smoke out through a hose, and it has to go somewhere. Run it out a window, or buy the [xTool Desktop Smoke Purifier](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CFFN7FR4?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $249), which xTool sizes for light engraving. For heavier cutting xTool points to the larger AP2. Our [ventilation guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-ventilation-guide/) explains both routes.

- **Eye protection.** Not needed with the lid shut, since it’s Class 1.

- **Air assist.** Already built in.

- **Rotary.** Optional. The M2 40W Deluxe bundle includes an RA3 Lite rotary; for the 10 W, check xTool’s listing for a compatible rotary before you buy.

- **Fire safety.** Keep a small [ABC extinguisher](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084P5PPNC?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) nearby and never leave a job running unattended. See [accessories worth buying](https://laserengraversguide.com/accessories/) for the rest.

## Reliability and warranty

The M2 launched in 2026, and the 10 W listing had 55 Amazon ratings when we checked, so there’s no long-term reliability record yet. xTool covers it for 12 months and sells paid xToolCare extensions. The M2 replaces the M1 Ultra at roughly half that machine’s price. Tom’s Hardware reviewed it at its $599 launch price; Amazon showed $499 against a $699 list price on October 29, 2026.

## Bottom line

The M2 10W is the laser we’d hand a nervous first-timer: Class 1, assembled, camera-guided and about $499. Its limits are cutting power and a closed software ecosystem, and the upgrade heads can push the total toward machines in a higher class. If that’s fine, it’s the easiest start in our [best lasers for beginners](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/best-laser-engraver-for-beginners/) roundup. ## xTool M2 10W FAQ

### Do I need safety glasses with the xTool M2?
Not in normal use. The M2 is a Class 1 laser product, certified by TÜV SÜD, so the enclosure contains the beam while the lid is closed. If you ever open the lid while the laser could fire, or someone tampers with the interlock, blue-diode glasses rated for 445–455 nm are the backup.

### Can the xTool M2 10W cut clear acrylic or thick wood?
No clear acrylic: blue diode light passes through it. On wood, xTool's spec table gives 8 mm basswood and 3 mm black acrylic in one pass for the 10 W head. The 20 W head raises that to 10 mm and 8 mm, the 40 W head to 15 mm and 11 mm. For clear acrylic you need a CO2 laser such as the xTool P2S.

### Does the xTool M2 work with LightBurn?
xTool lists no LightBurn support for the M2. You design and run jobs in xTool Studio, which handles the cameras, autofocus and the inkjet head. If LightBurn matters to you, look at the Creality Falcon A1 or A1 Pro.

### Can I upgrade the M2 10W later?
Yes. The heads are magnetic and swappable: xTool sells 20 W and 40 W diode heads, a 3 W 1064 nm IR head for bare metal and plastics, and a CMYK inkjet head. Price the upgrades before you buy, because a 40 W setup costs about $1,199 on its own.
