# Laser Engraved Christmas Ornaments: Materials, Settings Basics and Best Machines for Holiday Projects (and Selling Them)
Updated November 2, 2026 By [Laser Engravers Guide Editorial Team](https://laserengraversguide.com/about/) [How we research](https://laserengraversguide.com/how-we-research/)

Prices are approximate and change often, so check the current price before you buy.

## Key takeaways

- **Basswood plywood at 3 mm is the best first ornament material.** It engraves cleanly and cuts on a 10 W diode, and it is cheap enough to waste on tests.
- **Never trust a settings number from a forum.** Power and speed depend on your exact machine and material, so run a test grid on a scrap from the same batch before the real run.
- **Clear acrylic ornaments need CO2.** Blue diodes pass straight through clear acrylic, so a diode can't cut it.
- **Ventilation and fire safety matter more at holiday volume.** Batches of wood mean more smoke and longer runs, and a laser must never run unattended.
- **If you plan to sell, check the design, not just the cut.** Characters, logos and bought designs can come with licence limits that stop you selling the finished ornament.

Laser engraved Christmas ornaments are one of the best first projects for a new machine. They are small, the material is cheap, and every one is a personalized gift or a craft-fair product.

This guide covers materials, how to dial in settings without guessing, which lasers in our data suit holiday projects, the safety kit and what to check before you sell. Prices are the Amazon ranges in our model data as of October 29, 2026, so check the current price before you buy. We are a research site, not a test lab, and we give no settings that we have not seen from a maker.

## What materials work for laser engraved ornaments?

Match the material to your laser type, because wavelength decides what you can use. Our [materials guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/what-materials-can-a-laser-cut/) covers the full list, and the [material checker](https://laserengraversguide.com/tools/material-checker/) lets you check anything you are unsure about.

| Material | Diode | CO2 | Notes for ornaments |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 3 mm basswood or birch plywood | Cuts and engraves | Cuts and engraves | The default. Buy laser-grade sheets, as cheap plywood has glue voids |
| Slate | Engraves | Engraves | Light grey mark on black. Engraves, but doesn’t cut |
| Veg-tanned leather, leatherette | Cuts and engraves | Cuts and engraves | Good for tags and flat ornaments. Never use faux leather of unknown type |
| Clear cast acrylic | No | Cuts and engraves | CO2 only. Blue light passes straight through |
| Black or dark opaque acrylic | Cuts thin sheets | Cuts and engraves | Blue and transparent colours still don’t work on a diode |

Basswood plywood is the right first choice. A 3 mm sheet pack such as the [12-pack of 3 mm basswood](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DRG9L2TD?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $25) gives you plenty of ornaments and test pieces. A 10 W diode cuts about 3 mm in a pass or two, per our materials guide.

Slate gives a light-on-dark look, and [slate coasters](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CDWL9YPH?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $41 for 60) are a cheap practice blank. Leatherette blanks such as the [laserable patches](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BFDQZKPZ?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $14 for 50) suit flat ornaments and gift tags, though not fiber-only lasers.

Clear acrylic ornaments look great on a tree, but they need CO2. The [clear cast acrylic sheets](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BHSCPS3K?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $46 for 10) are CO2 material. If you own a diode, make your acrylic ornaments from opaque dark sheet, or stick to wood.

What never goes in. PVC, vinyl, faux leather, polycarbonate, ABS and foam release harmful fumes or catch fire. Glitter vinyl and “pleather” craft sheets are often PVC. If you can’t identify a material, don’t laser it, and read our [safety guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-safety-guide/).

## How do you find the right laser settings for ornaments?

Honestly: you test. Power and speed depend on your laser’s optical output, its focus, the material and the thickness. A number from a video for a different machine can burn or underwork your stock.

A reliable routine:

- **Start from the maker’s library.** xTool Studio, Creality’s software and LightBurn offer material presets. Treat them as a starting point.

- **Run a test grid on a scrap from the same batch.** A grid varies power along one axis and speed along the other, so one small piece shows the full range. Label it.

- **Write down what works,** per material, thickness and supplier.

- **Test the cut separately from the engraving.** A good engrave setting is far gentler than a cut setting.

- **Add passes before power.** Several lighter passes with air assist char less than one aggressive pass.

- **Check focus.** Autofocus, as on the xTool M2 and Falcon A1C, removes a common cause of weak marks.

Small ornaments mean small features, so keep detail large enough to survive: thin hanging holes and delicate snowflake tips can burn away or snap. If the engraving looks muddy, check line spacing and material rather than turning the power up.

A light sand and a wipe removes soot from the edges. Masking tape on the wood face during the cut can keep smoke marks off; test it on a scrap first.

## Which laser engraver is best for ornaments?

Ornaments are small, so you do not need a big or powerful machine. You need a laser that holds focus, has a camera or good alignment tools, and is safe to run in a home. The picks below come from our model data.

| Machine | Laser class | Bed | Price (Oct 29, 2026) | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Falcon A1C 10W](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/creality-falcon-a1c-10w/) | Class 1 | 150 × 150 mm | about $379–399 | Cheapest start, one or two small ornaments at a time |
| [xTool M2 10W](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/xtool-m2-10w/) | Class 1 | 426 × 320 mm | about $499 | Best all-round, batches of ornaments |
| [Falcon A1 10W](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/creality-falcon-a1-10w/) | Class 1 | 381 × 305 mm | about $549 | Big bed on a budget |
| [Falcon A1 Pro 20W](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/creality-falcon-a1-pro-20w/) | Class 1 | 358 × 268 mm | about $1,099 | Faster cutting and batches |
| [xTool P2S](https://laserengraversguide.com/laser-engravers/xtool-p2s/) | Class 4 (enclosed lid) | 600 × 305 mm | about $2,919 | Clear acrylic and serious volume |

[xTool M2 10W](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GSVLTBH4?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) is the one we would pick for most ornament makers. It is Class 1, arrives assembled, has two cameras and autofocus, and its 426 × 320 mm bed holds a full sheet of ornament blanks at once. xTool’s own guidance says goggles aren’t required for Class 1 products such as the M2. Trade-offs: it runs xTool Studio rather than LightBurn, and it is a recent launch with a short reliability record. [Check the xTool M2 price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GSVLTBH4?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)

[Falcon A1C 10W](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H5WTQNYH?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) is the cheapest way into an enclosed laser. It has autofocus, a camera and a Class 1 enclosure. The 150 × 150 mm bed limits you to a couple of ornaments per run and it has no air assist, so batches are slow. It suits someone making a handful of gifts. [Check the Falcon A1C price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0H5WTQNYH?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)

[Falcon A1 Pro 20W](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FDFFN85C?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) is the step up if you will cut hundreds of ornaments. It is a 20 W diode in a Class 1 enclosure with built-in air assist, autofocus and a touchscreen. Owners and reviewers report spotty Wi-Fi, and its “180W” title is electrical input. See how it differs from the cheaper machine in [Falcon A1 vs Falcon A1 Pro](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/creality-falcon-a1-vs-falcon-a1-pro/). [Check the Falcon A1 Pro price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FDFFN85C?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)

[xTool P2S](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DDXQYH36?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) is the machine for clear acrylic ornaments and bigger runs, because it is a 55 W CO2. It is Class 4 despite its lid, so glasses rated for its wavelength matter, xTool lists OD5+ for the P2/P2S, and you need proper ventilation. [Check the xTool P2S price on Amazon](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DDXQYH36?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20)

## What safety gear do you need for holiday batches?

Ornament season means longer sessions and more wood, so smoke and fire risk go up. The full method is in our [safety guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-safety-guide/) and [ventilation guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-ventilation-guide/). The short version:

- **Class matters.** The FDA treats Class I as non-hazardous and Class IV as an immediate skin and eye hazard that may also be a fire hazard. A Class 1 enclosed laser is the safer home choice.

- **Never leave it running.** LightBurn says never to run a laser unsupervised, and a camera feed doesn’t count.

- **Keep fire gear in reach.** LightBurn recommends a Class C-rated extinguisher, a fire blanket and a spray bottle. It also warns that dry chemical powder is corrosive and will destroy the laser, so a [fire blanket](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TYT543Y?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $40) is a good first line.

- **Vent the smoke.** Every laser makes smoke, wood especially. A window setup, such as an [inline duct fan](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JB292JC?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $90) with [25 ft of aluminum duct](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01EUURUVM?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $19), moves it outside. The [xTool desktop smoke purifier](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CFFN7FR4?tag=laserengraversguide.com-20) (about $249) suits light work on xTool machines.

- **Glasses for open or Class 4 machines,** matched to your laser’s wavelength.

## How do you make ornaments that look good?

Keep lines bold, since fine hairlines vanish on wood and can break on thin stock. Keep the hanging hole well clear of the edge, engrave before you cut so the piece stays fixed, and add a name or year, since personalization is why people buy. Finish with a sand, a wipe and a loop of twine, and arrange many pieces on one sheet to batch the work.

## Can you sell laser engraved Christmas ornaments?

Many people do, and ornaments are among the most popular seasonal laser products. A few honest cautions before you set up a table:

- **Design licences.** Many free and purchased files exclude commercial use, and some allow it only with a licence. Read the terms before you sell any finished product.

- **Characters and logos.** Licensed characters, sports teams and brand logos are protected. Skip them unless you have permission.

- **Local rules.** Business licences and sales tax differ by place; check your own.

- **Your own costs.** Test a price in our [profit calculator](https://laserengraversguide.com/tools/profit-calculator/), and see our [startup cost guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraving-business-startup-cost/) for the wider budget.

## A holiday timeline for ornament makers

Today is Monday, November 2. Christmas is December 25.

| When | Do this |
| --- | --- |
| This week (Nov 2 to Nov 8) | Set up ventilation and fire gear. Order blanks and test sheets. Pick two or three designs. |
| Nov 9 to Nov 15 | Run test grids and sample ornaments. Fix settings and charring now. |
| Nov 16 to Nov 25 | Run the real batches, a few sessions at a time. Sand, finish and package. |
| Nov 27 to Nov 30 | Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Use for supplies, or a machine for next year. |
| December | Final personalized orders, re-dos and shipping buffer. |

## Should you buy a laser on Black Friday for this season?

Black Friday 2026 is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30. We can’t know 2026 prices in advance, and our [laser engraver Black Friday guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/laser-engraver-black-friday-deals/) explains how to judge a deal on the day. For this season, though, a machine bought on November 27 would arrive when you most need to be running batches, and you would still need to set up ventilation, learn the software and test materials.

If you already own a laser, spend sale week on blanks and safety gear. If you are buying a first machine, buy now if ornaments this year matter, or wait if next year is fine. Our [gift guide](https://laserengraversguide.com/posts/best-laser-engraver-gifts-2026/) covers buying a laser for someone else.

## The bottom line

The best laser engraved ornaments come from boring choices done well: 3 mm laser-grade basswood, a test grid before every new batch, bold designs and a safe, ventilated setup. For most people the xTool M2 10W is the best machine in our data, the Falcon A1C is the budget way in, the A1 Pro suits bigger runs, and a CO2 like the P2S is only needed for clear acrylic. If you plan to sell, check your design licences first and test your price against your real costs. Start this week, because the weeks before Christmas go quickly.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best material for laser engraved Christmas ornaments?
Laser-grade basswood or birch plywood, 3 mm thick, is the best starting point. It cuts and engraves on a 10 W diode, takes a clear mark and costs little. Slate engraves light grey on black, veg-tanned leather and leatherette work on diodes and CO2, and clear cast acrylic needs a CO2 laser.

### What laser settings should I use for ornaments?
There is no universal number. Power and speed depend on the laser, the material and its thickness, so start from the maker's material library and run a test grid on a scrap of the same stock. Increase speed or lower power if the mark is too dark, and add a pass or slow down if a cut doesn't go through.

### Can a 10 W diode laser cut wooden ornaments?
Yes, for thin stock. A 10 W diode cuts about 3 mm basswood in a pass or two, per our materials guide, and the xTool M2's maker claims 8 mm basswood in one pass. Thicker or denser wood takes more passes and air assist.

### Can I make clear acrylic ornaments with a diode laser?
No. Blue diode light passes through clear acrylic, so it can't cut or engrave it well. A CO2 laser can, which is the main reason people buy one. Opaque dark acrylic is a different story, and a diode can cut thin sheets of it.

### Do I need an enclosed laser for ornaments?
It is the safer choice, especially for family projects. A Class 1 enclosed laser keeps the beam inside with the lid closed. Open-frame diodes and several lidded machines are Class 4 and need glasses rated for their wavelength for everyone nearby. Any laser still makes smoke and needs ventilation.

### Can I sell laser engraved ornaments?
Often yes, but check the rules first. Use designs you made or have a commercial licence for, since many free and bought files exclude selling products. Avoid copyrighted characters and trademarked logos. Check your local rules on business licences and sales tax, which vary.

### When should I start making ornaments for Christmas?
Start now. Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30, but a laser bought then arrives late for setup, ventilation and test runs. If you already own one, test materials this week, run batches in mid-November and keep early December as buffer.
