The verdict

The Aura is the most appliance-like laser here; Reviewed found it fun and approachable, and the filter bundle means no window venting. But 6 W is weak for $1,100, it won't work without Glowforge's cloud, and the company's 2025 restructuring makes buying a cloud-tethered machine a bigger bet than it used to be. Unless you specifically want Glowforge's catalog and Proofgrade workflow, the xTool M2 or Creality Falcon A1 Pro gives you more power, offline or LightBurn options and a steadier support picture for the money.

What we like

  • Genuinely simple: one button, live camera preview, autofocus and automatic settings with Proofgrade materials
  • Class 1 certified, and the Amazon bundle includes the Craft Laser Filter so it can run without a window vent
  • Browser-based app works from a Mac, PC, Chromebook, tablet or phone

Watch out for

  • Only 6 W: cuts up to ¼ in and is slow next to 10–20 W diodes at this price
  • Cloud-dependent: needs Wi-Fi to run, no LightBurn, and the best catalog sits behind Premium ($239/yr per Reviewed)
  • Glowforge went through an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors in late 2025 before its co-founders bought back the assets
  • The Amazon offer on Oct 29, 2026 came from a third-party seller (NAVIRA.) with only 2 in stock

  • Glowforge describes the head fan as combined cooling and air assist; there's no separate air pump or adjustable airflow like the dedicated air assist on xTool and Creality machines.
  • Glowforge doesn't publish the wavelength; it calls Aura a 'blue, 6-watt, solid-state laser' that can't process glass, clear/white/blue acrylic or vinyl.
  • Glowforge's own store sold the Aura alone for $999 on Oct 29, 2026; the Amazon listing is the Aura + Craft Laser Filter bundle. Filter cartridges are a recurring cost.
  • GeekWire (Nov 6, 2025): Glowforge restructured through an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors, and co-founders Dan Shapiro and Mark Gosselin acquired the brand, hardware and software, saying the same products would continue. Weigh this before buying a machine that needs Glowforge's servers.
  • Glowforge lists titanium and aluminum among engravable materials; with a 6 W blue diode we rate metal as coated or anodized stock only.
  • Amazon's offer was sold by a third party, not Glowforge; check the seller and warranty terms at checkout.

Specs are compiled from manufacturer listings and independent reviews and may change between production runs. Laser makers re-bundle often, so confirm what's in the box on the Amazon page before buying.

The Glowforge Aura is a 6 W enclosed diode “craft laser” that works more like an appliance than any other machine in our guide: one button, a live camera preview, autofocus and automatic settings when you use Glowforge’s Proofgrade materials. The Amazon listing we track is the Aura plus Glowforge’s Craft Laser Filter, at about $1,104 (check today’s price and the seller). For that money it’s weak on power and tied to Glowforge’s cloud, and the company’s 2025 restructuring adds risk. If you’re not sure it’s the right fit, compare it in the laser matcher.

Who the Aura is for (and who should skip it)

It’s for Cricut-style crafters who want the simplest guided workflow and plan to lean on Glowforge’s Proofgrade materials and design catalog. The browser-based app runs on a Mac, PC, Chromebook, tablet or phone, so there’s no software to install. Reviewed found it fun and approachable.

Skip it if you care about power per dollar. The xTool M2 costs less with 10 W, two cameras and upgradeable heads, and the Creality Falcon A1 Pro gives you 20 W, LightBurn support and offline control from a touchscreen for about the same money. Skip it too if you want to use LightBurn or worry about a machine that needs a company’s servers to run.

Key capabilities

Simplicity is the point. With Proofgrade materials the Aura sets power and speed itself, the lid camera shows a live preview of the design on the material, and autofocus handles height. Glowforge’s spec page says it can cut materials up to 1/4 in thick and engrave items up to 3/4 in thick with the cutting tray removed. Material size tops out at 12 × 12 in, with a cutting area of about 144 sq in.

The 6 W blue diode is the limitation. It’s slow next to the 10–20 W diodes at this price and cuts only thin stock. Glowforge says it can’t process glass, clear, white or blue acrylic, or vinyl. It lists titanium and aluminum as engravable, but with a 6 W diode we’d treat metal as coated or anodized stock only. There’s no rotary option. The material checker shows what a blue diode can handle.

Software and the cloud question

Everything runs in Glowforge’s web app over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. There’s no LightBurn support and no offline mode. Reviewed puts the optional Premium subscription, which unlocks the best of the design catalog, at $239 a year.

That dependence matters more after 2025. GeekWire reported that Glowforge went through an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors in November 2025, after which co-founders Dan Shapiro and Mark Gosselin acquired the brand, hardware and software and said the same products would continue. That’s a reasonable outcome, but a machine that needs Glowforge’s servers is a bigger bet than one that runs on local software. Our xTool M2 vs Glowforge Aura comparison weighs this directly.

What you’ll need beyond the box

  • Ventilation. Glowforge requires either its filter or an openable window within 8 feet. The Amazon bundle includes the Craft Laser Filter (Glowforge sells it alone for $399), so budget for replacement cartridges. For window venting, see our ventilation guide.
  • Eye protection. Not needed in normal use. Glowforge certifies the Aura as a Class 1 laser product containing an embedded Class 4 laser, so never defeat the lid.
  • Air assist. No dedicated air assist pump and no way to add one; the head relies on its built-in fan.
  • Rotary. Not available.
  • A cool room. Glowforge recommends operating between 60 and 75 °F.
  • Fire safety. An ABC extinguisher nearby, and never leave a job running. Other basics are on our accessories page.

Reliability and warranty

Glowforge offers a 12-month warranty when you buy direct, where the Aura alone was $999 on October 29, 2026. The Amazon offer that day came from a third-party seller (NAVIRA.) with only two in stock, not from Glowforge, so check the seller and warranty terms at checkout. At 19 lb it’s easy to move between rooms.

Bottom line

The Aura is the most appliance-like laser we cover, and Reviewed enjoyed using it. But 6 W is weak for about $1,100, it won’t run without Glowforge’s cloud, and the 2025 restructuring makes that dependence a bigger bet than it used to be. Unless you specifically want Glowforge’s catalog and Proofgrade workflow, the xTool M2 or Falcon A1 Pro gives you more power and a steadier software picture for the money. Accessories for the Glowforge Aura

Official and universal add-ons sold on Amazon — safety glasses, fume extraction, air assist, rotaries and materials. Check the listing confirms your exact model before you buy.

  • Safety
CARLANY 190–490 nm OD6+ laser safety glassesUniversal fit

Blue-diode protection for anyone near an open-frame laser, or when you lift the lid or override an interlock on an enclosed one. Covers 445–455 nm blue diodes only; does not protect against 1064 nm IR/fiber or 10.6 µm CO2. Match the OD rating to your laser's wavelength.

  • Safety
Amerex B417T 2.5 lb ABC fire extinguisher with bracketUniversal fit

Lasers cut by burning; a small ABC extinguisher mounted beside the machine is the cheapest fire insurance you can buy. Dry-chemical powder can ruin a laser's optics and electronics; LightBurn recommends a CO2 extinguisher for the machine itself.

  • Safety
Amerex 322 5 lb carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisherUniversal fit

Class B:C CO2 leaves no powder residue, so it puts out a fire in the machine without destroying the optics. Pricier than ABC; not rated for Class A (wood/paper) fires on its own, so keep a fire blanket too.

  • Safety
Prepared Hero emergency fire blanket, 39 × 39 in (2-pack)Universal fit

Smothers a flare-up on the bed without coating the machine's optics in extinguisher powder.

  • Fumes & enclosure
AC Infinity Cloudline S4 4-inch inline duct fan with speed controllerUniversal fit

Boosts a laser's built-in exhaust over long duct runs so smoke actually leaves the room. Check your machine's exhaust port diameter; adapters may be needed.

  • Fumes & enclosure
VIVOSUN 4-inch aluminum ducting, 25 ft with clampsUniversal fit

Replaces short stock hoses so you can reach a window or wall vent; foil duct tolerates hot exhaust better than vinyl.

  • Materials
    3 mm basswood plywood sheets, 12 × 12 in (12-pack)Universal fit

The default test and project stock for every laser here; 12 × 12 in fits all but the smallest beds. Cut down for the 150 mm A1C or galvo machines.

  • Materials
VIBRATITE 4-inch square black slate coasters (60-pack)Universal fit

Best-selling laser blank: slate engraves light grey on black with any diode, CO2 or IR source.

  • Materials
Laserable leatherette hat patches with adhesive, 3 × 2 in (50-pack)Universal fit

Cheap, fast-selling patch blanks that engrave cleanly with diode and CO2 lasers. Not for fiber-only lasers such as the ComMarker B4.

  • Materials
YOUKE OLA powder-coated 20 oz tumblers for laser engraving (16-pack)Universal fit

Powder coat ablates to bright steel with diode, CO2 or fiber lasers, which makes these the classic rotary product. Needs a rotary attachment on flatbed machines.

Compatibility checked October 2026. More in our laser engraver accessories guide.

Glowforge Aura FAQ

Does the Glowforge Aura work without the internet?
No. It needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and runs through Glowforge's browser-based app, and it doesn't support LightBurn. If Glowforge's servers or your Wi-Fi are down, the laser can't run jobs.
What happened to Glowforge in 2025?
GeekWire reported in November 2025 that Glowforge restructured through an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors, and co-founders Dan Shapiro and Mark Gosselin acquired the brand, hardware and software, saying the same products would continue. Because the Aura depends on Glowforge's cloud, it's worth weighing before you buy.
Do I need a filter or a window for the Glowforge Aura?
One or the other. Glowforge's spec page requires either its filter or an openable window within 8 feet. The Amazon listing we track is the Aura + Craft Laser Filter bundle, so it can run without a window; filter cartridges are a recurring cost.
What can't the Glowforge Aura cut?
It cuts materials up to 1/4 in thick. Glowforge says it can't process glass, clear, white or blue acrylic, or vinyl, and it recommends against its Draftboard and medium plywood. Laser cutting vinyl will destroy the laser, according to Glowforge.
