Safety gear
Guide →Wavelength-rated glasses and fire protection. Buy these before the first cut, not after.
- SafetyAmerex B417T 2.5 lb ABC fire extinguisher with bracketUniversal fit
Lasers cut by burning; a small ABC extinguisher mounted beside the machine is the cheapest fire insurance you can buy. Dry-chemical powder can ruin a laser's optics and electronics; LightBurn recommends a CO2 extinguisher for the machine itself.
- SafetyAmerex 322 5 lb carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisherUniversal fit
Class B:C CO2 leaves no powder residue, so it puts out a fire in the machine without destroying the optics. Pricier than ABC; not rated for Class A (wood/paper) fires on its own, so keep a fire blanket too.
- SafetyCARLANY 190–490 nm OD6+ laser safety glassesUniversal fit
Blue-diode protection for anyone near an open-frame laser, or when you lift the lid or override an interlock on an enclosed one. Covers 445–455 nm blue diodes only; does not protect against 1064 nm IR/fiber or 10.6 µm CO2. Match the OD rating to your laser's wavelength.
- SafetyCloudray 1064 nm laser safety gogglesCompatible, third-party
The invisible 1064 nm beam of fiber and IR lasers needs its own eyewear; blue-diode glasses won't stop it. Fits: ComMarker B4 20W, xTool F2, xTool F1 Ultra, xTool F2 Ultra, LaserPecker LP5, Falcon A1C 10W, Falcon A1 Pro. For 1064 nm sources only. Dual-laser machines need protection for both wavelengths; check the OD rating on the listing.
- SafetyPrepared Hero emergency fire blanket, 39 × 39 in (2-pack)Universal fit
Smothers a flare-up on the bed without coating the machine's optics in extinguisher powder.
Fume extraction & enclosures
Guide →Every material makes smoke. Vent it outdoors with a duct fan, filter it with a purifier, or contain an open-frame machine in an enclosure.
- Fumes & enclosureLaserPecker LP5 safety enclosure with alignment cameraOfficial LaserPecker
Turns the LP5 into a Class 1 setup with a camera and smoke control, which you need for indoor or in-store use. Fits: LaserPecker LP5. The LP5 + Enclosure Amazon bundle was cheaper than buying both separately on Oct 29, 2026.
- Fumes & enclosurexTool Desktop Smoke Purifier (3-layer filtration)Official xTool
Lets the M2 or F-series run indoors without a window vent for light engraving work. Fits: xTool M2 10W, xTool F2, xTool F1 Ultra. xTool sizes it for low-smoke machines; for heavy cutting it recommends the SafetyPro AP2.
- Fumes & enclosurexTool SafetyPro AP2 smoke purifierOfficial xTool
The purifier xTool pairs with its CO2 and high-power machines when venting outdoors isn't possible. Fits: xTool P2S, xTool S1 40W, xTool F2 Ultra, xTool M2 10W. xTool positions the larger AP2 Max for the P3.
- Fumes & enclosureAC Infinity Cloudline S4 4-inch inline duct fan with speed controllerUniversal fit
Boosts a laser's built-in exhaust over long duct runs so smoke actually leaves the room. Check your machine's exhaust port diameter; adapters may be needed.
- Fumes & enclosureCreality laser engraver enclosure, 700 × 720 × 400 mm, with exhaust fanCompatible, third-party
A fire-resistant tent that contains smoke and stray blue light from open-frame diodes. Fits: A20 Pro V2, Ray5 40W. Measure your frame first: the Ray5 40W and A20 Pro V2 footprints are close to the 700 × 720 mm limit. An enclosure doesn't make a Class 4 laser Class 1; keep goggles on when it's open.
- Fumes & enclosureVIVOSUN 4-inch aluminum ducting, 25 ft with clampsUniversal fit
Replaces short stock hoses so you can reach a window or wall vent; foil duct tolerates hot exhaust better than vinyl.
Air assist
A steady stream of air at the cut point: cleaner, deeper cuts, less charring and fewer flare-ups.
- Air assistAtomstack F80 air assist pump, 10–60 L/minOfficial Atomstack
The base A20 Pro V2 ships without air assist; this is what gives clean, deep cuts with less charring. Fits: A20 Pro V2.

What to buy first
Three things come before any upgrade: eye protection rated for your laser's wavelength (unless the machine is a fully enclosed Class 1 unit and you never run it with the lid open), a way to get smoke out of the room, and a fire extinguisher within reach. Many open-frame diode lasers ship with a pair of glasses; check that they're rated for the wavelength and optical density the maker recommends rather than assuming.
Ventilation: duct out or filter
Venting outdoors through a window kit and an inline duct fan is the cheapest and most effective option when you have a window. A smoke purifier with HEPA and activated carbon filters lets you run indoors where you can't vent, but the filters are a running cost and carbon saturates quickly with heavy wood cutting. Enclosed machines have an exhaust port; open frames need an enclosure to capture smoke at all. Our ventilation guide covers duct sizing and fan airflow.
Air assist and a honeycomb bed
Air assist blows smoke and debris away from the cut, which means cleaner edges, deeper cuts per pass and fewer flare-ups. Many current machines include it; on older or budget open frames it's the most worthwhile upgrade. A honeycomb bed lifts the work so the beam exits cleanly and back-side scorching drops, though it collects residue and needs cleaning.
Rotaries are for round things
Tumblers, mugs, rings and bottles need a rotary that spins the item under the beam. Buy the one made for your machine where possible: the software, mounting and connection are matched. Roller rotaries suit tumblers and bottles; chuck rotaries hold tapered or uneven items and rings. Galvo machines and enclosed boxes sometimes need a riser to fit a rotary underneath.
Materials that behave
Settings only transfer between jobs if the material is consistent. Laser-grade basswood plywood uses a glue that cuts cleanly; cast acrylic engraves white and frosty where extruded acrylic doesn't. Before you buy anything new, check it in the material checker, and never laser PVC or vinyl. Still choosing the laser itself? Start with the comparison chart.
