The verdict

The F2 Ultra is the best metal engraver in this guide: a 60 W MOPA that color-marks and deep-engraves, a 40 W diode for everything else, accurate cameras and solid software. Tom's Hardware and TechRadar both rate it highly for business use. It's expensive, it becomes an open Class 4 laser whenever you use the conveyor or rotary, and it's overkill if you only mark the odd tumbler; a ComMarker B4 or xTool F2 does that for a fraction of the price.

What we like

  • 60 W MOPA fiber for deep engraving, 3D embossing, color marking on stainless and titanium, and 2 mm metal cuts
  • 40 W diode cuts up to 23 mm wood (multiple passes), so organics don't need a second machine
  • 48 MP dual cameras with autofocus and 15,000 mm/s galvo speed
  • Tom's Hardware called it 'the best experience we've had with metal engraving'; LightBurn 2.2.0+ supported

Watch out for

  • $5,099 for the dual-laser version ($4,099 MOPA-only)
  • Class 4: conveyor and rotary jobs run with the lid open and the interlock overridden, so you need 1064 nm and 455 nm goggles (none included)
  • No air assist, and material presets were thin at review time
  • 47 lb, and xTool Studio's AI design tools use paid credits

The xTool F2 Ultra is a flagship galvo laser that pairs a 60 W MOPA fiber with a 40 W blue diode in an enclosed workstation with dual 48 MP cameras. It’s the best metal engraver we track, and our pick for the best laser engraver for metal. The dual-laser version cost about $5,099 on Amazon on October 29, 2026 (list $6,499), and the MOPA-only F2 Ultra (Single) about $4,099. Check today’s price on both. At this price the question is payback, so run your numbers through the profit calculator before you decide.

Who the F2 Ultra is for (and who should skip it)

It’s for jewelry makers, trophy and engraving shops, and businesses doing high-volume metal personalization alongside wood or leather work. The MOPA source is the reason to buy it. It can color-mark stainless and titanium, deep-engrave, emboss in 3D and, per xTool’s FAQ, cut 2 mm brass and stainless and 1 mm aluminum. The 40 W diode means you don’t need a second machine for organic materials.

Skip it if you only mark the odd tumbler or dog tag. The ComMarker B4 20W or the portable xTool F2 does that for a fraction of the price. Skip it if your work is mostly cutting sheet goods; a CO2 flatbed like the xTool P2S has a much bigger bed for less than half the price.

Key capabilities

Tom’s Hardware called it “the best experience we’ve had with metal engraving,” and TechRadar also rated it highly for business use. The combination explains why:

  • MOPA fiber, 60 W. Color marking, deep engraving and 3D embossing on metal, at galvo speeds up to 15,000 mm/s. A standard Q-switched fiber like the one in the xTool F1 Ultra can’t color-mark.
  • 40 W diode. xTool lists 23 mm basswood and 20 mm acrylic in multiple passes, more cutting headroom than most galvo machines offer. Dark acrylic only; clear acrylic still needs CO2.
  • Cameras and autofocus. Dual 48 MP cameras with autofocus make placement accurate on small, high-value pieces like rings and pendants.
  • Room to grow. The field is 220 × 220 mm, or 220 × 500 mm with the conveyor, with clearance for objects up to 150 mm tall. LightBurn 2.2.0+ works too, though LightBurn calls the support preliminary.

The weak spots at review time were thin material presets and xTool Studio’s AI design tools, which run on paid credits. Neither affects core engraving, but expect to build your own settings for unusual metals.

What you’ll need beyond the box

  • Eyewear for both wavelengths, because none is included. The enclosed lid blocks laser leakage when closed, but conveyor and rotary jobs run with the lid open and the interlock overridden. That’s an open Class 4 laser. Get eyewear rated for 1064 nm and 455 nm for everyone nearby, such as Cloudray 1064 nm goggles for the fiber and CARLANY blue-light glasses for the diode, checking OD ratings for whichever source is running.
  • Fume handling. There’s no air assist, and metal marking, coatings and wood all produce fumes. xTool pairs the F2 Ultra with its SafetyPro AP2 purifier, or you can duct outside. Our ventilation guide explains which suits a storefront or studio.
  • A rotary for rings and tumblers. The RA3 MagSwap rotary is built for the F2 Ultra.
  • A solid bench and fire basics. It weighs 47 lb. Keep an ABC extinguisher nearby and never leave jobs, especially open-lid ones, unattended.

Our laser engraver safety guide and the accessories page cover the rest.

Reliability and warranty

xTool covers the F2 Ultra for 1 year, and its store lists a 14-day return policy. It’s a newer machine, and the MOPA-only Single listing had just 27 Amazon ratings (3.9 stars) on October 29, 2026, so there’s limited owner history. Prices have also moved a lot: Tom’s Hardware quoted $4,999 for the Single at review time, against about $4,099 on Amazon now. For a business purchase, compare xTool’s store and Amazon on the day, and confirm whether you’re getting the Single or the Dual.

Bottom line

The F2 Ultra is the most capable metal engraver we track: a 60 W MOPA that color-marks, deep-engraves and cuts thin metal, a 40 W diode for everything else, accurate cameras, and preliminary LightBurn support. It’s expensive, it becomes an open Class 4 laser whenever you use the conveyor or rotary, and it’s overkill for occasional metal work. If metal is your business, it’s the one to buy. If metal is a sideline, the F1 Ultra or a ComMarker B4 costs thousands less. Our best laser engraver for metal guide compares them side by side.

xTool's newer rotary with LiDAR mapping and magnetic mode swaps, built for the P3 and F-series.

  • Safety
CARLANY 190–490 nm OD6+ laser safety glassesUniversal fit

Blue-diode protection for anyone near an open-frame laser, or when you lift the lid or override an interlock on an enclosed one. Covers 445–455 nm blue diodes only; does not protect against 1064 nm IR/fiber or 10.6 µm CO2. Match the OD rating to your laser's wavelength.

  • Safety
Cloudray 1064 nm laser safety gogglesCompatible, third-party

The invisible 1064 nm beam of fiber and IR lasers needs its own eyewear; blue-diode glasses won't stop it. For 1064 nm sources only. Dual-laser machines need protection for both wavelengths; check the OD rating on the listing.

  • Safety
Amerex B417T 2.5 lb ABC fire extinguisher with bracketUniversal fit

Lasers cut by burning; a small ABC extinguisher mounted beside the machine is the cheapest fire insurance you can buy. Dry-chemical powder can ruin a laser's optics and electronics; LightBurn recommends a CO2 extinguisher for the machine itself.

  • Safety
Amerex 322 5 lb carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisherUniversal fit

Class B:C CO2 leaves no powder residue, so it puts out a fire in the machine without destroying the optics. Pricier than ABC; not rated for Class A (wood/paper) fires on its own, so keep a fire blanket too.

  • Safety
Prepared Hero emergency fire blanket, 39 × 39 in (2-pack)Universal fit

Smothers a flare-up on the bed without coating the machine's optics in extinguisher powder.

  • Fumes & enclosure
AC Infinity Cloudline S4 4-inch inline duct fan with speed controllerUniversal fit

Boosts a laser's built-in exhaust over long duct runs so smoke actually leaves the room. Check your machine's exhaust port diameter; adapters may be needed.

  • Fumes & enclosure
VIVOSUN 4-inch aluminum ducting, 25 ft with clampsUniversal fit

Replaces short stock hoses so you can reach a window or wall vent; foil duct tolerates hot exhaust better than vinyl.

  • Materials
    3 mm basswood plywood sheets, 12 × 12 in (12-pack)Universal fit

The default test and project stock for every laser here; 12 × 12 in fits all but the smallest beds. Cut down for the 150 mm A1C or galvo machines.

xTool F2 Ultra FAQ

What's the difference between the F2 Ultra Single and Dual?
The Single has only the 60 W MOPA fiber laser and cost about $4,099 on Amazon on October 29, 2026. The Dual adds a 40 W blue diode for wood, leather and dark acrylic and cost about $5,099. If you'll never engrave organic materials, the Single saves $1,000; most mixed-product shops will want the Dual.
Can the F2 Ultra color-mark stainless steel?
Yes. That's what the MOPA source adds over a standard Q-switched fiber like the xTool F1 Ultra's. It can produce color marks on stainless steel and titanium, as well as deep engraving and 3D embossing.
Does the F2 Ultra need safety glasses?
It's rated Class 4. With the lid closed, the enclosure blocks laser leakage, but conveyor and rotary jobs run with the lid open and the interlock overridden. For those, you need eyewear for both 1064 nm and 455 nm, and none comes in the box.
Does the F2 Ultra work with LightBurn?
Preliminarily. xTool says the F2 Ultra and F2 Ultra (Single) work with LightBurn 2.2.0 and above, but LightBurn lists them as functional and still needing testing, and xTool's cameras don't work there. xTool Studio remains the full-featured option.
