"Output" is optical laser power, not the electrical input some listings advertise. Output is only comparable within one laser type: a 40 W CO2 and a 40 W diode behave very differently. See laser wattage explained and diode vs CO2 vs fiber.

Specs are manufacturer ratings from Amazon listings and spec sheets. Prices are typical US street prices for the base bundle as of October 2026 and change often.

Working area (square inches)The biggest flat piece each machine can engrave in one job, as rated by the maker.

Galvo machines have small fields but are many times faster. Some open frames and pass-through enclosures take longer pieces; tap a bar for notes.

  • Enclosed
  • 600 × 305 mm

Makers and small businesses who want to cut thick wood and every kind of acrylic, engrave glass, and still have camera-guided, autofocus convenience.

  • 55 W CO2: 18 mm basswood and 20 mm acrylic in one pass (maker claim), including clear acrylic
  • Dual 16 MP cameras, LiDAR autofocus and curved-surface engraving
  • 600 × 305 mm bed plus passthrough for 3 m-long stock; strong built-in exhaust and air pump
  • Class 4 machine in a 99 lb, 1 m-wide box; needs a sturdy bench and venting outside or the AP2 purifier

xTool P3 80W Flagship CO2 Laser
  • 80 W co2
  • Enclosed
  • 915 × 458 mm

Production shops that want a large-format, Class 1, highly automated CO2 cutter for batch work and can justify a $6,300-plus machine.

  • 80 W CO2, a 915 × 458 mm (36 × 18 in) bed, 1,200 mm/s, and 20 mm basswood / 25 mm acrylic in one pass (maker claim)
  • Class 1 certified, with built-in CO2 fire suppression, 8 IR sensors and side cameras
  • Built-in inverter water chiller and motorized AutoLift autofocus
  • 231 lb and 1.25 m wide; Tom's Hardware calls it massive, and the mobile stand is extra

xTool M2 10W Color Craft Laser
  • 10 W diode
  • Enclosed
  • 426 × 320 mm
  • Bare metal

First-time buyers who want a genuinely home-safe, camera-guided laser for gifts, stickers and crafts, with room to grow into more power or color printing.

  • Class 1 enclosure (TÜV SÜD certified) with a built-in air pump and exhaust fan, so no goggles in normal use
  • Two cameras (5 MP panoramic + 2 MP close-range) plus autofocus make placing designs on blanks drag-and-drop
  • Magnetic swappable heads: add a 20 W or 40 W diode, a 3 W IR head for metal and plastic, or a CMYK inkjet later
  • The 10 W head cuts only about 8 mm basswood and 3 mm black acrylic in one pass (maker claim), and no clear acrylic

How to read this chart

Type is the light source, which decides what a laser can cut and mark (see diode vs CO2 vs fiber). Output is optical power at the lens, and only compares within one type (laser wattage explained). Format separates open frames, enclosed boxes and fast galvo machines — enclosure matters for safety and smoke. Work area is the largest flat piece in one job. Metal tells you whether it only removes coatings or marks bare metal. Not sure what fits? The laser matcher narrows the list, and the material checker shows what each type can handle.

FAQ

Which laser engraver scores highest in 2026?
By our research-based score, the xTool P2S 55W Desktop CO2 Laser currently ranks highest (8.7/10), but the right laser depends on what you make, where it will live and your budget. Sort the table by the spec that matters most, or use the laser matcher.
Should I buy a diode, CO2 or fiber laser?
Diode lasers are the affordable all-rounder for wood, leather, cardboard, dark acrylic and coated metal. CO2 lasers cut faster and cleaner and handle clear acrylic and glass, but cost more and need water cooling and serious venting. Fiber lasers are for marking and engraving bare metal. Our diode vs CO2 vs fiber guide explains the trade-offs.
Is a 40 W diode laser as powerful as a 40 W CO2 laser?
No. Wattage only compares within one laser type. Diode, CO2 and fiber lasers use different wavelengths that materials absorb very differently, so a 40 W CO2 cuts acrylic that a 40 W diode can't touch, while a 20 W diode engraves wood well. Also check whether a listing quotes optical output or electrical input — this chart uses optical output.
Is an enclosed laser safer than an open-frame one?
Yes. Enclosed machines with lid interlocks are typically Class 1, meaning the beam stays inside while the lid is shut, and they capture smoke for the exhaust. Open-frame diodes are Class 4: everyone in the room needs wavelength-rated glasses, and you need a separate way to deal with smoke.
