The verdict

For buyers who can vent a laser outside, the P2S is the best all-rounder in this guide: CO2 cuts thick wood and clear acrylic that no diode can, xTool's cameras and autofocus make it nearly as easy as a craft laser, and the Amazon price has fallen to about $2,900. It's big, heavy and Class 4, and its glass tube is a wear item. If you need Class 1 in a shared space, look at the xTool S1 or the far pricier P3; if you mainly engrave small items, a diode saves money.

What we like

  • 55 W CO2: 18 mm basswood and 20 mm acrylic in one pass (maker claim), including clear acrylic
  • Dual 16 MP cameras, LiDAR autofocus and curved-surface engraving
  • 600 × 305 mm bed plus passthrough for 3 m-long stock; strong built-in exhaust and air pump
  • Amazon price has fallen to about $2,919 from a $4,199 launch price

Watch out for

  • Class 4 machine in a 99 lb, 1 m-wide box; needs a sturdy bench and venting outside or the AP2 purifier
  • The glass tube fades with use (xTool: about 95% power at 1,000 h, about 70% at 6,000–8,000 h)
  • Fire-safety set is extra; riser, conveyor and rotary add $1,000 or more
  • LightBurn works, but without camera or autofocus support

  • xTool spec table (Oct 29, 2026): 18 mm basswood / 20 mm acrylic in one pass; rotary diameter 3–50 mm without the riser, up to 180 mm with it.
  • A CO2 beam can't mark bare metal on its own; use coated or anodized stock or marking spray. The P3's optional IR module is xTool's CO2 route to bare metal.
  • The Gadgeteer listed the P2S at $4,199 at launch (Jan 2025). Amazon showed $2,919 against a $4,499 list price on Oct 29, 2026.
  • xTool's FAQ quotes a 6,000–8,000 hour tube life with gradual power loss.

The xTool P2S is a 55 W desktop CO2 laser with a 600 × 305 mm bed, dual cameras, LiDAR autofocus and a passthrough slot for long stock. It’s our best overall laser engraver for 2026, because it cuts thick wood and every kind of acrylic while staying almost as easy to use as a craft laser. Amazon listed it at about $2,919 on October 29, 2026, down from a $4,199 launch price, so check today’s price. If you’re torn between this and an enclosed diode, try the laser matcher or read our best laser engravers of 2026.

Who the P2S is for (and who should skip it)

It’s for makers and small businesses who want one machine for signs, boxes, earrings, cake toppers, acrylic displays and engraved glassware, and who have a garage, workshop or room with a window for the exhaust. If the material list includes clear acrylic or glass, a CO2 like this is the tool for it.

Skip it if you need a Class 1 machine in a shared room and can’t vent outside. The xTool S1 40W is Class 1 and cuts thick wood, though not clear acrylic. Skip it if you mainly engrave small items, where a diode costs far less, or if bare metal is the job: CO2 marks only coated metal. And measure first. The P2S weighs 99 lb and is about 1 m wide.

Cutting, engraving and ease of use

xTool claims 18 mm basswood and 20 mm acrylic in one pass. Its FAQ adds a practical limit worth knowing: solid wood up to 18 mm is fine, but xTool advises against cutting plywood thicker than 12 mm, because thick plywood can catch fire. xTool also says the P2S cuts 3 mm basswood at 35 mm/s, which it puts at six times faster than a 20 W diode. That’s a maker figure, but CO2 lasers are much faster cutters than diodes.

The convenience features are what make it our top pick. Dual 16 MP cameras show the bed for drag-and-drop placement, LiDAR autofocus measures material height, and curved-surface engraving handles uneven pieces. The AutoPassthrough slot accepts stock up to 3 m long. LightBurn works, but without camera or autofocus support, so you’ll frame jobs and enter thickness by hand.

What you’ll need beyond the box

  • Venting, first and foremost. The built-in 145 CFM exhaust fan is meant to push smoke through a pipe out a window. For longer runs, add 4-inch foil ducting and an inline duct fan. No window? The xTool SafetyPro AP2 is the purifier xTool pairs with the P2S, and the All-in-One bundle includes it. Our ventilation guide covers both setups.
  • Cooling is built in. Unlike budget CO2 machines such as the OMTech K40+, which runs a pump in a bucket of water, the P2S handles cooling internally. xTool’s alert system monitors cooling status and water level, so watch for those warnings and follow the manual’s maintenance schedule.
  • Fire safety. xTool’s fire-safety set is extra. At minimum, mount an ABC extinguisher and keep a fire blanket nearby. CO2 cuts by burning, so never leave a job unattended, AI fire detection or not.
  • Eye safety. The light-filtering lid locks during jobs, and there’s an emergency stop. Never defeat the interlock. The Amazon P2S is Class 4 with an enclosed lid, while xTool says it also sells a Class 1 variant, so check which one you’re buying if Class 1 matters.
  • Bed, rotary and extras. The Honeycomb Working Panel 2.0 stops small parts from dropping through, and the RA2 Pro rotary handles tumblers. The Versatile Bundle adds the RA3 rotary, riser base and conveyor for about $3,948. Clear cast acrylic is the material that justifies a CO2.

See the accessories page for everything we’ve matched to the P2S.

Reliability and warranty

xTool covers the P2S for 1 year. The glass tube is the long-term wear item: xTool quotes 6,000–8,000 hours, with output down to about 95% at 1,000 hours and about 70% by the end of that range. For a hobbyist, that’s years of use; for a shop running daily, it’s a cost to plan for. One stock note: xTool’s own store showed the P2S as pre-order in late October 2026, while Amazon had it available.

Bottom line

If you can vent a laser outdoors, the P2S is the best all-rounder we track: CO2 cutting through thick wood and clear acrylic, glass engraving, and cameras plus autofocus that make it nearly as easy as a craft laser, now for about $2,900. It’s big, heavy and Class 4 as sold on Amazon, and its tube wears with use. Need Class 1 in a shared space? Choose the S1 or the much pricier xTool P3. Our xTool S1 vs xTool P2S comparison breaks down that decision.

  • Fumes & enclosure
xTool SafetyPro AP2 smoke purifierOfficial xTool

The purifier xTool pairs with its CO2 and high-power machines when venting outdoors isn't possible. xTool positions the larger AP2 Max for the P3.

  • Rotary
xTool RA2 Pro rotary attachmentOfficial xTool

4-in-1 rotary for tumblers, glasses, rings and spheres on xTool's enclosed and galvo machines. xTool says it must be used with a riser on enclosed machines; check whether your S1 bundle already includes it.

  • Bed & riser
xTool P2 Honeycomb Working Panel 2.0Official xTool

Stops small cut pieces falling through the slats and cuts backside flashback on the P2S.

  • Safety
CARLANY 190–490 nm OD6+ laser safety glassesUniversal fit

Blue-diode protection for anyone near an open-frame laser, or when you lift the lid or override an interlock on an enclosed one. Covers 445–455 nm blue diodes only; does not protect against 1064 nm IR/fiber or 10.6 µm CO2. Match the OD rating to your laser's wavelength.

  • Safety
Amerex B417T 2.5 lb ABC fire extinguisher with bracketUniversal fit

Lasers cut by burning; a small ABC extinguisher mounted beside the machine is the cheapest fire insurance you can buy. Dry-chemical powder can ruin a laser's optics and electronics; LightBurn recommends a CO2 extinguisher for the machine itself.

  • Safety
Amerex 322 5 lb carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisherUniversal fit

Class B:C CO2 leaves no powder residue, so it puts out a fire in the machine without destroying the optics. Pricier than ABC; not rated for Class A (wood/paper) fires on its own, so keep a fire blanket too.

  • Safety
Prepared Hero emergency fire blanket, 39 × 39 in (2-pack)Universal fit

Smothers a flare-up on the bed without coating the machine's optics in extinguisher powder.

  • Fumes & enclosure
AC Infinity Cloudline S4 4-inch inline duct fan with speed controllerUniversal fit

Boosts a laser's built-in exhaust over long duct runs so smoke actually leaves the room. Check your machine's exhaust port diameter; adapters may be needed.

  • Fumes & enclosure
VIVOSUN 4-inch aluminum ducting, 25 ft with clampsUniversal fit

Replaces short stock hoses so you can reach a window or wall vent; foil duct tolerates hot exhaust better than vinyl.

  • Materials
    3 mm basswood plywood sheets, 12 × 12 in (12-pack)Universal fit

The default test and project stock for every laser here; 12 × 12 in fits all but the smallest beds. Cut down for the 150 mm A1C or galvo machines.

xTool P2S FAQ

Can the xTool P2S cut clear acrylic?
Yes, and that's one of the main reasons to buy a CO2 laser. xTool claims the P2S cuts up to 20 mm acrylic in one pass, in any color, including clear. It also engraves glass directly, which blue diodes can't do without a coating.
Do I need to vent the P2S outside?
Yes, or use a dedicated purifier. xTool's built-in 145 CFM exhaust fan is designed to push smoke through a pipe out a window. If you can't vent outdoors, xTool pairs the P2S with its SafetyPro AP2 purifier, which costs about $919 on its own.
How long does the P2S laser tube last?
xTool quotes 6,000–8,000 hours for the glass CO2 tube, with power fading gradually: about 95% at 1,000 hours and about 70% by 6,000–8,000 hours. Most hobbyists won't get close to that for years, but busy shops should budget for a replacement tube.
Can the P2S engrave stainless steel?
Not directly. A CO2 beam marks only coated metal, such as anodized aluminum or powder-coated tumblers. xTool says bare stainless needs a marking spray first. For bare metal, look at a fiber laser such as the xTool F1 Ultra.
