The verdict

The F1 Ultra is the one-box answer for shops that engrave both metal and organics: a true fiber plus a strong diode, a big galvo field, camera batch tools and an enclosure. Make: liked it a lot, with gripes about alignment and the fixed base plate. With the F2 Ultra now on sale, buy the F1 Ultra for its lower price; if you want color marking on stainless or faster deep metal work, the F2 Ultra's 60 W MOPA is the better long-term tool.

What we like

  • A real 20 W fiber for bare metal plus a 20 W diode for wood, leather and dark acrylic
  • Up to 10,000 mm/s and a 220 mm-square field, large for a desktop fiber
  • 16 MP camera with automatic batch fill; optional conveyor for continuous runs
  • Enclosed cover filters both wavelengths, with fire alarm and emergency stop

Watch out for

  • Make: found laser alignment fiddly and missed the removable bottom plate for jigs
  • Still classed Class 4, and xTool's spec sheet lists no LightBurn support
  • Q-switched fiber: no MOPA color marking, and no air assist
  • At $2,499 it sits only about $1,600 below the 60 W MOPA F2 Ultra (Single)

The xTool F1 Ultra is a desktop galvo laser with two real sources: a 20 W 1064 nm fiber for bare metal and a 20 W blue diode for wood, leather and dark acrylic, inside an enclosed lid with a camera. It’s the one-box answer for small businesses that personalize both metal and organic goods. Amazon listed it at about $2,499 on October 29, 2026, down from $3,699 at launch and against a $2,919 list price, so check today’s price. It’s our pick for the best laser engraver for small business. Who the F1 Ultra is for (and who should skip it)

It’s for shops that sell a mix of products: engraved tumblers and wallets, metal keychains and wooden coasters, jewelry and leather patches. Having both lasers under one lid, aligned with one camera, means one machine and one workflow instead of two. The 16 MP camera’s automatic batch fill places a design on every blank in a tray, and an optional conveyor stretches the field to 220 × 500 mm for continuous runs.

Skip it if you only do one side of that mix. For metal alone, the ComMarker B4 20W is a cheaper fiber. For cutting wood, the 220 mm field and multi-pass cuts make a flatbed like the xTool S1 40W a better tool. Skip it as well if you need color marking on stainless, which needs a MOPA source.

What it does well

The fiber marks and deep-engraves bare stainless, brass, aluminum, gold and silver with no coating, at up to 10,000 mm/s. A 220 mm-square field is large for a desktop fiber, and objects up to 145 mm tall fit underneath. The Amazon listing says the fiber can also cut very thin sheet metal (0.3 mm stainless, 0.4 mm brass, 0.2 mm aluminum), which helps with small jewelry blanks.

The diode does everything a blue laser does: wood, leather, cork, slate, dark acrylic and coated tumblers. xTool lists 15 mm basswood and 12 mm acrylic in multiple passes, but cutting isn’t the reason to buy a galvo. Think engraving first, light cutting second.

Make: liked the machine a lot, with two complaints worth knowing. Laser alignment was fiddly, and the base plate doesn’t come out, which makes custom jigs harder. Both are workflow annoyances rather than deal-breakers.

What you’ll need beyond the box

  • Smoke purification or venting. There’s no air assist, but xTool builds in smoke extraction, and that exhaust has to go somewhere. For a storefront or spare room, xTool recommends its SafetyPro AP2 purifier for the F1 Ultra because of its larger filters. The smaller Desktop Smoke Purifier suits lighter engraving loads. Our ventilation guide explains when a purifier is enough.
  • Eyewear for both wavelengths. The cover filters both beams when closed, but the machine is still Class 4. For setup, maintenance and any open-lid work, get eyewear rated for 455 nm and 1064 nm. Cloudray 1064 nm goggles cover the fiber only and CARLANY blue-diode glasses cover the diode only, so check OD ratings for the wavelength you’re running.
  • A rotary for tumblers. xTool lists the F1 Ultra as compatible with the RA2 Pro, and the newer RA3 MagSwap rotary is built for the F-series.
  • Fire basics. An ABC extinguisher nearby; the F1 Ultra has a fire alarm and emergency stop, but don’t leave it running unattended.

See the accessories page for the full list.

Reliability and warranty

xTool covers the F1 Ultra for 1 year, and its store lists a 14-day return policy. The F1 Ultra has been on the market long enough for a full Make: review and a $1,200 drop from its launch price. The flip side is that the F2 Ultra now sits above it in xTool’s lineup. That’s good for price but worth remembering if you want the newest hardware. The 32 lb weight makes it a fixed bench machine rather than something you carry to markets.

Bottom line

The F1 Ultra is the most sensible one-box laser for a shop that engraves both metal and organics: a true fiber plus a strong diode, a big galvo field, camera batch tools and an enclosure, for about $2,500. Choose it over the LaserPecker LP5 unless low weight is the deciding factor (our F1 Ultra vs LP5 comparison goes deeper). Choose the xTool F2 Ultra instead if you want color marking or faster deep metal work and can spend about $1,600 more on the MOPA-only version.

Accessories for the xTool F1 Ultra

Official and universal add-ons sold on Amazon — safety glasses, fume extraction, air assist, rotaries and materials. Check the listing confirms your exact model before you buy.

  • Fumes & enclosure
xTool Desktop Smoke Purifier (3-layer filtration)Official xTool

Lets the M2 or F-series run indoors without a window vent for light engraving work. xTool sizes it for low-smoke machines; for heavy cutting it recommends the SafetyPro AP2.

  • Rotary
xTool RA2 Pro rotary attachmentOfficial xTool

4-in-1 rotary for tumblers, glasses, rings and spheres on xTool's enclosed and galvo machines. xTool says it must be used with a riser on enclosed machines; check whether your S1 bundle already includes it.

  • Rotary
xTool RA3 MagSwap smart rotaryOfficial xTool

xTool's newer rotary with LiDAR mapping and magnetic mode swaps, built for the P3 and F-series.

  • Safety
CARLANY 190–490 nm OD6+ laser safety glassesUniversal fit

Blue-diode protection for anyone near an open-frame laser, or when you lift the lid or override an interlock on an enclosed one. Covers 445–455 nm blue diodes only; does not protect against 1064 nm IR/fiber or 10.6 µm CO2. Match the OD rating to your laser's wavelength.

  • Safety
Cloudray 1064 nm laser safety gogglesCompatible, third-party

The invisible 1064 nm beam of fiber and IR lasers needs its own eyewear; blue-diode glasses won't stop it. For 1064 nm sources only. Dual-laser machines need protection for both wavelengths; check the OD rating on the listing.

  • Safety
Amerex B417T 2.5 lb ABC fire extinguisher with bracketUniversal fit

Lasers cut by burning; a small ABC extinguisher mounted beside the machine is the cheapest fire insurance you can buy. Dry-chemical powder can ruin a laser's optics and electronics; LightBurn recommends a CO2 extinguisher for the machine itself.

  • Safety
Amerex 322 5 lb carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisherUniversal fit

Class B:C CO2 leaves no powder residue, so it puts out a fire in the machine without destroying the optics. Pricier than ABC; not rated for Class A (wood/paper) fires on its own, so keep a fire blanket too.

  • Safety
Prepared Hero emergency fire blanket, 39 × 39 in (2-pack)Universal fit

Smothers a flare-up on the bed without coating the machine's optics in extinguisher powder.

  • Fumes & enclosure
AC Infinity Cloudline S4 4-inch inline duct fan with speed controllerUniversal fit

Boosts a laser's built-in exhaust over long duct runs so smoke actually leaves the room. Check your machine's exhaust port diameter; adapters may be needed.

  • Fumes & enclosure
VIVOSUN 4-inch aluminum ducting, 25 ft with clampsUniversal fit

Replaces short stock hoses so you can reach a window or wall vent; foil duct tolerates hot exhaust better than vinyl.

xTool F1 Ultra FAQ

Is the xTool F1 Ultra safe to use without goggles?
xTool rates the F1 Ultra Class 4 even though it has an enclosed lid. The cover is designed to filter both wavelengths, so keep it closed during jobs; if you open it or run anything with it open, wear eyewear rated for both 455 nm and 1064 nm.
Can the F1 Ultra cut metal?
Only very thin sheet. The Amazon listing says the 20 W fiber cuts 0.3 mm stainless, 0.4 mm brass and 0.2 mm aluminum. It's built to mark and deep-engrave metal, not to cut it. The F2 Ultra's 60 W MOPA cuts up to 2 mm brass and stainless, per xTool.
Does the F1 Ultra do color marking on stainless steel?
No. Its fiber source is Q-switched, not MOPA, so it doesn't color-mark stainless or titanium. For color marking, step up to the xTool F2 Ultra.
Does the F1 Ultra support LightBurn?
Yes, with caveats. LightBurn 2.2 lists the F1 Ultra as supported (table dated October 6, 2026), including multi-source jobs, but only on current xTool firmware (40.52.016.05 or higher for the Class 4 model, 40.53.007.05 or higher for the Class 1 model). xTool's built-in cameras don't work in LightBurn, so camera placement stays in xTool Studio.
